Course aims and roughly what we'll be covering every week

Course aims

1.     Build on First Year AI with both theory and implementation.

2.     Integrate different AI techniques into a single project.

3.     Give a more detailed account of both symbolic and biological AI, and introduce you to neural computation in practice.

Week 1-3 Introduction to Poplog, an AI environment
Introduction to Pop11
Week 4 Implementing Eliza (Sharples ch. 2)
Start Assignment 1:  an Eliza-type program
Week 5 Revision of last year: What Eliza Can't Do - a history and overview of AI
Weeks 6-9 Assignment 2:  write an integrated, intelligent Tourist Guide, which can do some of the things Eliza can't do:
  • week 7:  search (Sharples ch. 4)
  • week 8:  knowledge representation (Sharples chs. 3 & 6)
  • week 9:  NLP (Sharples ch. 5)
