2005 Conference Review
QualIT2005 was held at the picturesque Southbank Campus of Griffith University in Brisbane on the 23rd -25th November 2005. This year ‘Challenges for Qualitative Research’ built on the success of our 2004 Conference attracting qualitative researchers concerned with the analysis, design, development, application, usability and evaluation of information systems and information technologies.
Thirty-six research papers and seven research in progress papers were presented, with topical keynote presentations by Dr Cathy Urquhart; discussing Theory and Theory Building in IS Qualitative Research, and Professor Graeme Shanks, who discussed Case Study Research in Information Systems, and the impacts of the recently announced Australian Research Quality Framework. The ten best papers from the conference will be published in the Australian Journal of Information Systems and in the Journal of Research and Practice in 2006. The Conference was also the proud host of the Australian unveiling of latest version of the popular qualitative software from QSR, Nvivo 7, providing a forum for dialogue about the impacts that qualitative software tools are having on qualitative research.
Our E-Health discussion panel was relevant to the current research climate in Australia, with input from local health authorities. Our Blogging panel had input from a local author and discussed its value for research.
A Doctoral Consortium was held for the first time this year prior to the commencement of the Conference. Fourteen doctoral papers were selected to consortium of the total 20 submissions. The Doctoral Consortium provided a forum for doctoral students part way through their studies to present their research to a panel of researchers and supervisors experienced in qualitative research in information technology.
The 2005 conference continued to meet a need as a local gathering for qualitative researchers, giving a voice to contemporary challenges for qualitative research. We look forward to seeing you again in 2006. Watch this space for more information shortly.

AJIS to Publish Selected Papers from QualIT 2005
We are pleased to announce that a second journal, The Australian Journal of Information Systems (AJIS), expressed an interest to attract selected papers from the QualIT 2005 conference for publication in the journal. AJIS is refereed journal that publishes articles contributing to Information Systems theory and practice.
Journal of Research Practice to Publish Selected Papers from QualIT 2005
The Journal of Research Practice (JRP) has expressed an interest to attract selected papers from the QualIT 2005 conference for publication in the journal. This is an international refereed journal with a transdisciplinary focus, published electronically in the open access mode. The journal focuses on the principles and practices of research, as these are evolving in multiple disciplines and professional fields. Fields which have been posing fundamental difficulties for research design are of special interest to this journal. JRP seeks to promote innovative forms of research in different socially relevant areas.
Opening Plenary "Qualitative Software - What's Here and What's in the Future"
Dr. Tom Richards, QSR?s Chief Scientist, will introduce the radically new software, NVivo 7, and the thinking behind this next stage for developers and users. His plenary will show NVivo 7 for the first time in Australia and discuss the implications of its entirely new architecture, user interface and functions. Participate in a group session on Scenarios and futures: ideas and priorities for the next stage! A round table discussion follows the opening plenary, giving participants a chance to say what they want next for qualitative software. The suggestions will be reported and opened for broader discussion in a large group conclusion. The opening plenary will run from 3pm to 5:30pm on Wendesday November 23, following the Doctoral Consortium and just prior to the evening reception.
The second International Conference on Qualitative Research in IT & IT in Qualitative Research will be will be hosted by the Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia on November 23-25, 2005. QualIT2005 – Challenges for Qualitative Research will attract qualitative researchers concerned with the analysis, design, development, application, usability and evaluation of information systems and information technologies.
